How we collect and use data
Last updated: May 20, 2025
Your privacy matters. This page explains what information is collected when you browse this website, why it is collected, and the limited ways it is used.
Summary
I run this site to share projects and community work. I do not sell ads, share visitor data with marketers, or run invasive tracking scripts. Basic server insights help me keep the site secure and understand which pages are most helpful.
- Minimal analytics: no third-party analytics scripts are embedded.
- Server logs note limited visit details solely for troubleshooting and measuring engagement.
- A small local storage setting remembers whether you prefer dark or light mode; it does not track you across sessions or sites.
- You can contact me anytime to request deletion of log entries that can be reasonably linked to you.
Information collected
Page visit logs: When you load a page, the server notes basic technical details about the request so I can keep the site running smoothly. Examples include the time of visit, which page was viewed, and the type of browser or device used.
Voluntary submissions: If you email me or use a contact form, the information you provide is used only to respond to your message.
Cookies & local storage: This site does not set third-party cookies. A single first-party setting is stored in your browser’s local storage to remember your dark mode preference. You can clear it anytime by toggling themes or wiping site data in your browser.
How information is used
The visitor logs help monitor traffic patterns, diagnose issues, and defend against malicious activity. For example, they make it easier to spot repeated errors or attempts to abuse the site.
I may aggregate visit counts (e.g., “soap box racer page received 200 views in April”) to guide future writing. Aggregated statistics do not include identifying information.
Data sharing
I do not sell or rent visitor data. Logs remain on the server and are shared only when legally required or to investigate security incidents. If the site links to or embeds third-party services, they may collect their own information in line with their policies.
Retention
Visitor logs are retained for a limited period and deleted when no longer needed for security, troubleshooting, or legal reasons. Aggregated, non-identifying statistics may be kept longer.
Your choices
- You can request a copy of any log entries related to your visits (identified by IP address and timeframe).
- You can ask for reasonable deletion of those entries unless the data must be kept for security, legal, or operational reasons.
- Disable referrers or use privacy-protecting browsers/extensions if you prefer to limit the metadata shared with websites.
Contact
If you have questions about this policy or would like to exercise your privacy rights, email [email protected]. I try to respond within a reasonable timeframe.
